The Soft Return: Reawakening Your Desire After Rest

As the seasons shift, so too do our bodies, our rhythms, and our desires. For me, September carries a unique invitation: to step gently out of stillness and into a new aliveness. I call this tender process The Soft Return — a time when we emerge from rest, slowly reclaiming our bodies, our pleasure, and our erotic truth.

If you know me, you know that warmer and hotter months I am inside my home. I found this to be my time of rest and hibernation. Once September peaks my body does a soft awakening, a soft return. For years I have tried to to integrate into the cycle that most people are in which is outside during the Spring and Summer and slowly move inside during the Fall and Winter. It has never worked because as time went on I noticed my anxiety was extremely high during this time. I was going against my own human nature. It only took 2 decades to figure that out. Hey, I have it figured and for the last few years this is how I’ve moved.

I wanted to write this as a way for others who are like me to know this type of cycle does exist and show you how to have your soft awakening. A quick disclaimer…for those who awaken during the warmer and hotter months you can revisit this blog for your soft awakening.

Rest as Sacred Preparation

In a culture that prizes constant movement, rest is often treated as weakness. But in truth, rest is not a pause from life — it is life. Hibernation, retreat, and stillness are sacred states that prepare us for renewal. When we allow ourselves to rest deeply, we create space for desire to return with clarity and depth.

Think of it like the seasons: the earth rests in winter, then slowly, almost imperceptibly, the first blooms of spring begin to push through. Your body works in the same way. Desire does not disappear in rest; it waits for its time to unfurl.

The Gentle Path of Reawakening Desire

Reawakening desire is not about forcing yourself into pleasure or productivity. It is about curiosity, tenderness, and listening. Ask yourself:

  • What feels alive in me now?
  • Where does my body crave touch, movement, or connection?
  • What practices help me feel most at home in myself?

This process is not linear. It is a spiral — a soft return that may come in waves. One day you may feel vibrant, the next you may need stillness again. Both are part of the journey.

A Simple Ritual for The Soft Return

Here is a short practice to help you reawaken your body and connect with your desires this season:

  1. Create a small altar — light a candle, place a flower or object that feels alive with you.
  2. Close your eyes and breathe — notice where in your body you feel dormant and where you feel tingling with life.
  3. Place your hand on your heart or pelvis — whisper: I return to myself with gentleness and curiosity.
  4. Move slowly — stretch, sway, or dance with no agenda. Allow your body to lead.
  5. Journal for a few minutesWhat in me is ready to emerge now? What desires are whispering for my attention?

Even a five-minute ritual like this can open the doorway back into your sensual and erotic aliveness.

Living Into The Soft Return

The Soft Return is not just a moment — it’s a practice of honoring cycles. To return softly means to release the pressure to be “on” all the time, and instead to trust your body’s wisdom. Some seasons call you inward. Others call you outward. Both are sacred.

This September, I invite you to step gently into your own return. Reawaken your senses. Nourish your pleasure. Allow yourself to move at your own pace. And most of all — trust that your body knows the way home.
